VAT Registration
Mandatory or voluntary VAT registration, done right the first time — with the e-invoicing setup that makes it actually usable.
Mandatory Above a Threshold — Often Worth It Before That
VAT registration becomes mandatory once your annual turnover crosses the applicable threshold — but registering earlier, voluntarily, is often the better call for B2B businesses that want to reclaim VAT on their own purchases, or that sell mainly to other VAT-registered companies who won’t be affected by the added VAT line either way. Getting the timing and the mechanics right matters: registration changes how you invoice, what you owe on a recurring schedule, and what you can reclaim — done incorrectly, it creates exactly the kind of bookkeeping mismatch that draws attention during a review.
Albania For Business Sh.p.k. handles VAT registration end-to-end — assessing whether registration is required or advantageous, filing the application, and setting up compliant e-invoicing so you’re actually ready to invoice correctly from day one, not just registered on paper.

Mandatory vs. Voluntary Registration
- Mandatory registration applies once your annual turnover exceeds the applicable threshold (currently around €100,000) — at that point, registering isn’t optional and delaying it creates backdated liability.
- Voluntary registration is available below the threshold, and is often worth considering if you sell mainly to other VAT-registered businesses (who reclaim the VAT you charge, so it doesn’t cost them anything) and you want to reclaim VAT on your own purchases and costs.
- Voluntary registration is usually less attractive if you sell mainly to consumers or non-VAT-registered businesses, since your prices effectively rise by the VAT rate without a corresponding benefit to the buyer.
- Once registered — mandatory or voluntary — the same ongoing obligations apply: periodic returns, e-invoicing compliance, and record-keeping.
VAT Rates in Albania
| Rate | Applies To |
|---|---|
| 20% | Standard rate — the default for most goods and services |
| 6% | Reduced rate for certain tourism and accommodation-related services |
| 0% | Exports and specific zero-rated categories, including qualifying intra-EU transactions under reverse charge |
The VAT registration threshold, standard rate, and reduced-rate categories are set by Albanian tax law and are periodically updated. All figures shown here must be verified against current legislation before publication.
What Changes Once You’re VAT-Registered
- You must issue VAT-compliant invoices through Albania’s e-invoicing system, showing VAT separately from the net price.
- You file periodic VAT returns, declaring VAT charged on sales against VAT reclaimed on business purchases.
- You can reclaim input VAT on qualifying business purchases and expenses, reducing your effective cost on those items.
- Your pricing and quotes need to clearly state whether figures are VAT-inclusive or exclusive, particularly for consumer-facing pricing.
- If you transact with VAT-registered businesses elsewhere in the EU, you may also need VIES registration for intra-EU reverse-charge treatment.
VAT Registration, Step by Step
- Assessment — we confirm whether registration is mandatory for you now, or advantageous voluntarily, based on your turnover and customer base.
- Application prepared & filed — the registration application is submitted to the tax authority.
- VAT certificate issued — confirming your VAT number and effective registration date.
- E-invoicing setup — your invoicing is configured to issue VAT-compliant invoices from your first sale after registration.
- VAT return calendar confirmed — your filing schedule is set up and added to your compliance calendar.
What We Need From You
- Your company’s registration certificate and NIPT.
- An estimate of current and projected annual turnover.
- A description of your customers — mainly other businesses, consumers, or a mix — and whether they’re VAT-registered.
- Whether you transact with businesses elsewhere in the EU.
- Your current invoicing setup, if you’ve already issued invoices before registering.
Fee Schedule — Additional & Ongoing Services
Beyond the fixed package above, the following services are priced individually. Your adviser confirms an exact quotation once your structure, nationality and banking preference are known.
| Service | Indicative Fee |
|---|---|
| VAT registration — standard (as above) | €650 fixed fee |
| VAT registration with a non-resident director | from €200 |
| Retroactive VAT registration / correction | from €300 |
| EU VIES registration (intra-EU reverse charge) | from €150 |
| VAT deregistration (if no longer required or eligible) | from €150 |
| VAT refund claim support (exports / zero-rated activity) | from €200 |
| Monthly VAT return filing (see Monthly Accounting page) | from €150 / month |
Crossing the mandatory threshold without registering doesn’t just delay the inevitable — it typically creates a backdated liability once discovered, calculated from when registration should have happened, plus penalties. The reverse mistake is just as common: eligible B2B businesses that never register voluntarily, quietly losing out on input VAT recovery every month without realising it was ever an option. Both are worth checking proactively rather than discovering either one after the fact.
